Ministry and Clergy

Ministers and clergy have unique tax considerations, including dual tax status, self-employment taxes, housing allowances, and the option to opt out of Social Security. These resources provide a detailed overview to help navigate these complexities.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Client Expectations

Our standard tax prep fee includes a reasonable amount of time for upfront meetings or discussions, answering your questions, and a post-prep meeting to explain your return. It also covers normal communication during the preparation process.

If additional time is needed beyond this—for tasks such as resolving extensive questions or handling special circumstances—billing will be charged at $225 per hour. If any issue arises due to an error or omission on our part, the resolution will be covered under your original tax prep fee.

To ensure a smooth process, you are responsible for gathering and summarizing your tax documents before we begin. While we’re happy to assist with tax preparation, we cannot take on tasks like calling your investment advisor or tracking down property tax receipts.

Additionally, during busy season, an extra charge of $100 (minimum 30 minutes) will apply for each “piecemeal” submission if you send forms after your file is already in progress.

TRANSPARENT PRICING

Understanding Your Tax Prep Costs

Hedrick Tax Prep offers excellent value with "middle of the road" pricing—less than H&R Block and slightly more than Liberty Tax—but with the benefit of dedicated, timely, and personalized service.

If you’ve used a professional preparer (CPA or Enrolled Agent) in the past, we are happy to match their prior-year fee for a comparable return.

BASIC INDIVIDUAL RETURNS:

Our minimum fee for a new client filing a federal and one state return is $350–$400. This typically covers:

  • Single filers with one W-2

  • Married Filing Jointly or Head of Household, with itemized deductions or a comparison to the standard deduction

  • Common elements like healthcare reconciliation, interest/dividends, and other standard items

Additional Charges May Apply For:

  • Investments, 1099-B forms, stock sales, dividend complexities, or K-1s

  • Dependents ($10–$25 each for Child Tax Credit and due diligence requirements)

  • Schedule C (small business income) or Schedule E (rental properties/K-1s), starting at $50 per business or rental

  • ACA/Marketplace reconciliation (1095-A), $25–$100 depending on complexity

  • Ministry/clergy adjustments, including housing allowances and clergy self-employment tax calculations, $25–$50

CONSULTATION AND SPECIAL SERVICES:

  • A reasonable amount of consultation time is built into your fee, with a free 20-minute consultation for prospective clients outside of the busy season.

  • Additional consultation or problem-solving beyond the standard time is billed at $225/hour.

EXISTING CLIENTS:

Your fee will generally be consistent with last year’s, assuming no major changes. Discounts for organization, seniors, and ministry/clergy returns will continue to apply.

OTHER RETURNS:

  • Business returns (Scorp, Partnerships, Estates, Gift Taxes, and Non-Profits) start at $450.

  • Amended returns: $350+ for 2019 and newer (e-filed returns), $400+ for 2018 or earlier.
